UAE lawyers trash anti-corruption campaigner Kiran Bedi's comments

DUBAI Lawyers here have trashed statements by a prominent Indian anti-corruption campaigner who claimed that convicted thieves in the UAE have their hands cut off.

Kiran Bedi, a retired super-cop in India, has joined the lobby of anti-corruption icon Anna Hazare who is pushing for the passage of “Lokpal”, an anti-corruption bill being debated by members of the Indian Parliament.

Speaking at a joint Team Anna-Ramdev protest on Monday in New Delhi, she said the Lokpal they wanted would evoke the same “dread” as the UAE law, mandating that the hand of a thief be chopped off as punishment.

“The hands of thieves are chopped off there [UAE]. There is a fear of law. If the CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation) is under the control of Lokpal, wrongdoers will have the same fear,” she said.

Dubai Chamber establishes Lawyers Business Group

Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry has established a Lawyers and Legal Consultants Business Group to help it better represent, support and protect the emirate’s thriving legal community.

The group, which is the 26th such group under the umbrella of Dubai Chamber, has elected Ali Al Haddad as its President. Its objective is to develop the commercial and economic activities of Dubai’s legal profession and promote the investment opportunities of this sector.

Al Haddad said that under his leadership, the Lawyers and Legal Consultants Business Group will organise and support legal conferences held across the UAE and conduct research and studies to help develop the country’s legal profession.

He stressed the importance of developing a body to represent the legal profession and help address current challenges. He added that the group would help monitor the development of trade laws to better protect Dubai’s reputation as an international trade hub.

Haddad praised the support of Dubai Chamber in launching the Lawyers and Legal Consultants Business Group, saying the non-profit organisation has provided a platform for the legal profession allowing it to communicate better with its members and the relevant government entities.

Speaking on behalf of Dubai Chamber, Hassan Al Hashemi, Director, External Relations, said: “The establishment of the Lawyers and Legal Consultants Business Group reflects the commitment of Dubai Chamber to support all components of the business community.

“Dubai’s legal community is one of the best in the region and this group will help unite its many different aspects, giving them one voice to raise any issues or challenges with the relevant government authorities.

“The establishment of the group is an important step in bridging the communication between Dubai’s public and private sectors and will benefit Dubai’s legal profession by giving them a representative body under the umbrella of Dubai Chamber,” he said.
